Pharmacology
- Potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Anti-rheumatic
- Analgesic
- Antipyretic
- Uricosuric effect
- Inhibits prostaglandin biosynthesis
- Rapid and complete absorption from the gastro-intestinal tract
- Metabolized in the liver
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 75-150 mg daily in 2 to 3 divided doses
- Taken preferably after food
- Children: 1-3 mg of diclofenac/kg body weight daily in divided doses
- Elderly patients: Lowest effective dosage recommended
- Maximum daily dose: 150 mg
- For external use: 2-4 g of Diclofenac gel should be applied to the skin 3-4 times daily
Interaction
- Increased plasma concentrations of lithium and digoxin
- Isolated reports of increased risk of haemorrhage with anticoagulant therapy
- Can be given together with oral antidiabetic agents without influencing their clinical effect
- Caution with concomitant therapy of NSAID and quinolones
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any ingredient
- Peptic ulcer
- Hypersensitivity to Diclofenac or other non-steroid anti-inflammatory agents
- Not to be used under occlusive airtight dressings
Side Effects
- Mild, rare and transient adverse effects
- Epigastric pain
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Dizziness
- Peripheral edema
- Skin reactions such as rash and eczema
- Local irritation and reddening of the skin
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Should be used only for compelling reasons during pregnancy
- Lowest effective dose should be used
- Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy
- Not recommended during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Close observation in patients with advanced age
- Not to come in contact with eyes or mucus membranes
- Not to be taken by mouth
