Indications

• Treatment of hypertension
• Lowering blood pressure
• Prevention of cardiovascular events

Pharmacology

• Beta1-selective beta-blocker
• Diuretic with prolonged action
• Reduction in heart rates and cardiac output
• Diuresis with increased sodium and chloride excretion

Dosage & Administration

• Initial dose of Atenolol 50mg and Chlorthalidone 25mg once a day
• Adjust dosage in cases of severe renal impairment
• Use in elderly population not well studied

Interaction

• Potentiation of other antihypertensive agents
• Additive effect with calcium channel blockers
• Decrease in hypotensive effects with prostaglandin synthase inhibiting drugs
• Increased risk of bradycardia with digitalis glycosides

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to product or sulfonamide-derived drugs
• Sinus bradycardia
• Heart block greater than first degree
• Cardiogenic shock
• Overt cardiac failure
• Anuria

• Photosensitivity
• Muscle spasm

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category D
• Caution during breastfeeding

Precautions & Warnings

• Aggravation of peripheral arterial circulatory disorders
• Periodic determination of serum electrolytes

Overdose Effects

• Symptomatic and supportive treatment
• Removal of unabsorbed drug
• Consideration of dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and hypotension
