Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 75-150 mg daily in 2 to 3 divided doses
- Dosage should be reduced in long-term use
- Children dosage: 1-3 mg of diclofenac per kg body weight daily in divided doses
- Recommended daily dosage for adults of diclofenac dispersible tablet is 2-3 tablets
- Maximum daily dose of diclofenac suppository is 150 mg
- For external use only: 2-4 g of diclofenac gel to be applied to the skin 3-4 times daily
Interaction
- May increase plasma concentrations of lithium and digoxin
- Isolated reports of increased risk of hemorrhage with combined use of diclofenac and anticoagulant therapy
- Can be given together with oral antidiabetic agents without influencing their clinical effect
- Caution with concomitant therapy of NSAID and quinolones
- Co-administration with other systemic NSAIDs and steroids may increase frequency of unwanted effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the products
- Peptic ulcer
- Hypersensitivity to Diclofenac like other non-steroid anti-inflammatory agents
- Contra-indicated in asthmatic patients in whom attack with asthma, urticaria or acute rhinitis are precipitated by acetylsalicylic acid or by other drugs with prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor
- Not to be used under occlusive airtight dressings
Side Effects
- Adverse effects are mild, rare, and transient
- May cause epigastric pain, eructation, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache, peripheral edema, skin reactions such as rash and eczema
- May cause local irritation, reddening of the skin, and skin rash
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Should be employed only for compelling reasons during pregnancy
- Lowest effective dose should be used
- Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy
- Not recommended during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Close observation in rare instances of peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding
- Close observation for patients with advanced age
- Gel should not come in contact with eyes or mucous membranes
- Hands should be washed properly after application
