Pharmacology

Potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic, and uricosuric properties. Inhibits prostaglandin biosynthesis, rapidly and completely absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract, 99.7% bound to plasma proteins. Metabolized in the liver and undergoes first pass metabolism.

Dosage & Administration

  • Adults: 75-150 mg daily in 2 to 3 divided doses
  • Children: 1-3 mg of diclofenac/kg body wt. daily in divided doses
  • Elderly patients: lowest effective dosage is recommended
  • Maximum daily dose
  • For external use only
  • Depending on the size of area to be treated, 2-4 g of Diclofenac gel should be applied to the skin 3-4 times daily

  • Anticoagulants
  • Antidiabetic agents
  • Cyclosporin
  • Methotrexate
  • Quinolone antimicrobials
  • Other NSAIDs and steroids

Contraindications

  • Patients hypersensitive to any ingredient of the products
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Hypersensitivity to Diclofenac
  • Contra-indicated in asthmatic patient in whom attack with asthma, urticaria or acute rhinitis are precipitated by acetylsalicylic acid or by other drugs with prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor
  • Gel should not be used under occlusive airtight dressings

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Employed only for compelling reasons during pregnancy
  • Lowest effective dose should be used during pregnancy
  • Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy
  • Not recommended during lactation due to insufficient clinical data
  • Insignificant quantity detected in breast milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Close observation in rare instances where peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding occurs
  • Avoid contact with eyes or mucus membranes
  • Proper hand washing after application
  • Not to be taken by mouth
