Pharmacology

  • Potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: 75-150 mg daily in 2-3 divided doses
  • Reduction of dose in long term use
  • Children dosage: 1-3 mg of diclofenac/kg body weight daily in divided doses
  • Diclofenac Dispersible Tablet: Maximum daily dose is 150 mg
  • Diclofenac TR Capsule: One capsule daily
  • Diclofenac Gel: External use only, 2-4 g applied 3-4 times daily
  • Suppository dosage: 50 mg 2-3 times daily
  • Injection dosage: 1-2 ampoules daily for serious cases

Interaction

  • Potential interactions with lithium, digoxin, anticoagulants, antidiabetic agents, cyclosporin, methotrexate, quinolone antimicrobials, other NSAIDs, and steroids
  • Caution with concurrent use of NSAID and quinolones

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to ingredients
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Contra-indicated in asthmatic patients with known adverse reactions to prostaglandin synthetase inhibitor

  • Elderly patients should be closely monitored
  • Avoid contact with eyes or mucous membranes for the gel
  • Proper handwashing after application
  • Avoid oral ingestion
