Pharmacology
Potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) with pronounced anti-rheumatic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties
Dosage & Administration
- Adults: 75-150 mg daily in 2 to 3 divided doses, preferably after food
- Children: 1-3 mg of diclofenac/kg body wt. daily in divided doses
- Elderly patients: Lowest effective dosage is recommended
- Recommended daily dosage is 2-3 tablets for adults
- Maximum daily dose is 150 mg
- One capsule daily
- For adults: 50 mg suppository 2-3 times daily
- External use: 2-4 g of Diclofenac gel should be applied to the skin 3-4 times daily
Interaction
- Increased plasma concentrations of lithium and digoxin
- Increased risk of haemorrhage with the combined use of diclofenac and anticoagulant therapy
- Can be given together with oral antidiabetic agents without influencing their clinical effect
- Cases of nephrotoxicity reported in patients receiving cyclosporin and diclofenac concomitantly
- Serious toxicity reported when methotrexate and NSAIDs are given within 24 hours of each other
- Convulsions may occur due to interaction between quinolones and NSAIDs
- Co-administration of diclofenac with other systemic NSAIDs and steroids may increase the frequency of unwanted effects
Contraindications
Hypersensitive to any ingredient of the products, peptic ulcer, hypersensitivity to Diclofenac like other non-steroid anti-inflammatory agents, not recommended under occlusive airtight dressings

Pregnancy & Lactation
Diclofenac should be employed only for compelling reasons during pregnancy. Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy. Insignificant quantity may be detected in breast milk but no undesirable effects on the infant expected
Precautions & Warnings
- Close observation in rare instances of peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding
- Close observation in patients with advanced age
- Gel should not be allowed to come in contact with the eyes or mucus membranes
- Hands should be washed properly after application
- Not to be taken by mouth
