Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage range: 75-150 mg daily
  • Divided doses
  • Administered preferably after food
  • Dose reduction for long term use
  • Children dosage range: 1-3 mg of diclofenac/kg body weight daily
  • Elderly patients dosage considerations
  • Maximum daily dosage: 150 mg
  • For diclofenac gel: 2-4 g application 3-4 times daily
  • External use only
  • Diclofenac suppository adult dosage: 50 mg 2-3 times daily
  • Maximum suppository daily dose: 150 mg
  • Diclofenac injection usual adult dose: 1 ampoule daily
  • Maximum injection daily dose: 2 ampoules

Interaction

  • Potential drug interactions with lithium and digoxin
  • Increased risk of haemorrhage with anticoagulants
  • Can be given with oral antidiabetic agents
  • Risk of nephrotoxicity with cyclosporin
  • Potential serious toxicity when combined with methotrexate
  • Caution required when used concomitantly with quinolone antimicrobials
  • Increased risk of unwanted effects with other NSAIDs and steroids
  • Lowered plasma levels when used with aspirin

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to any ingredient
  • Peptic ulcer
  • Hypersensitivity to Diclofenac
  • Contraindicated in asthmatic patients with specific trigger conditions
  • Not to be used under occlusive airtight dressings

Side Effects

  • Mild, rare, and transient adverse effects
  • Possible initial complaints of epigastric pain, eructation, nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache
  • Encountered peripheral edema, rash, eczema
  • Local irritation and reddening of the skin from gel application

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Use during pregnancy only for compelling reasons
  • Lowest effective dose to be used during pregnancy
  • Not recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy
  • Insignificant quantity detected in breast milk

Precautions & Warnings

  • Close observation for peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Cautions for patients of advanced age
  • Avoid contact with eyes or mucus membranes
  • Avoid ingestion
