Pharmacology

  • Potent nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug

Dosage & Administration

  • Adult dosage: one ampoule once daily by intramuscular injection
  • Renal colic dosage: one ampoule once daily intramuscularly
  • Children dosage: 1-3 mg of Diclofenac Sodium per kg body weight daily in divided doses
  • Elderly patients: lowest effective dosage is recommended

Interactions

  • Potential interactions with lithium, digoxin, anticoagulants, antidiabetic agents, cyclosporin, methotrexate, quinolone antimicrobials, other NSAIDs and steroids, diuretics

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to Diclofenac
  • Active or suspected peptic ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Hypersensitivity to local anesthetics of the amide type
  • Adams-Stokes syndrome or severe degrees of heart block
  • Hypersensitivity to any excipients used in the formulation

Side Effects

  • Mild and transient side effects including gastrointestinal discomfort, nausea, diarrhea, injection site disorder, CNS reactions

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Should not be prescribed during pregnancy without compelling reasons
  • Lowest effective dosage should be used
  • Not recommended during the last trimester of pregnancy
  • Very small quantities may be detected in breast milk with no expected undesirable effects on the infant

Precautions & Warnings

  • Close observation for patients with severe hepatic, cardiac or renal insufficiency or elderly
  • Monitoring of renal function
  • Discontinuation in case of abnormal liver function tests or clinical signs of liver disease
  • Monitoring for long-term NSAID treatment
