Indications

• Treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children, adolescents, and adults

Pharmacology

• Mechanism of action related to selective inhibition of the pre-synaptic nor-epinephrine transporter
• Well-absorbed after oral administration
• Eliminated primarily by oxidative metabolism through the cytochrome P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) enzymatic pathway

Dosage & Administration

• Initial treatment guidelines for children and adolescents based on body weight
• Recommended total daily doses for different age groups
• Guidelines for maintenance and extended treatment
• No evidence available for pediatric use under 6 years of age

Interaction

• Possible need for slower titration when taking CYP2D6 inhibitor medicines
• Cautions and contraindications when taken with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), anti-hypertensive drugs, vasopressor agents, or tricyclic antidepressants

Contraindications

• Contra-indicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Atomoxetine
• Should not be taken with MAOIs, in patients with narrow angle glaucoma, severe cardiovascular disorders, uncontrolled hyperthyroidism, or phaeochromocytoma

Side Effects

• Common and uncommon side effects related to blood pressure, heart rate, abdominal pain, rash, dyspepsia, ejaculation disorder, fatigue, lethargy, tachycardia, paraesthesia, and peripheral coldness

Pregnancy & Lactation

• Pregnancy Category B3
• Caution advised during pregnancy and lactation due to limited study data on pregnant women and excretion in human milk

Precautions & Warnings

• Risk of suicidal ideation and behavior observed in clinical trials among children and adolescents
• Potential caution advised for aggressive behavior or hostility, seizures, and cardiovascular effects

Overdose Effects

• Common gastrointestinal symptoms and sympathetic nervous system activation reported in overdose cases
• Limited clinical trial experience with Attentin overdose with no fatal overdoses reported
