Indications

Pharmacology
- Potent nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Marked analgesic and antipyretic properties
- Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis
- Rapid action of Lidocaine as local anaesthetic
- Impairment of nerve impulse conduction by Lidocaine
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage
- Renal colic dosage
- Children dosage for Juvenile chronic arthritis
- Dosage for elderly patients
Interaction
- Increased plasma concentrations of Lithium and Digoxin with Diclofenac
- Possible risk of haemorrhage with Diclofenac and anticoagulant therapy
- Ability to be given together with oral antidiabetic agents without influencing their clinical effect
- Reported cases of nephrotoxicity with Cyclosporin and Diclofenac concomitantly
- Reported cases of serious toxicity with Methotrexate and NSAIDs given within 24 hours of each other
- Possible convulsions due to interaction between quinolones and NSAIDs
- Increased frequency of unwanted effects with co-administration of Diclofenac with other systemic NSAIDs and steroids
- Possible inhibition of diuretic activity by various NSAIDs
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Diclofenac
- Active or suspected peptic ulcer or gastrointestinal bleeding
- Attacks of asthma, urticaria or acute rhinitis precipitated by Aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Hypersensitivity to local anaesthetics of the amide type
- Adams-Stokes syndrome or severe degrees of heart block
- Hypersensitivity to any of the excipients used in the formulation
Side Effects
- Mild and transient side effects
- Gastrointestinal discomfort
- Nausea
- Diarrhea
- Bleeding
- Injection site disorder
- Abscesses and local necrosis in rare instances
- CNS reactions including drowsiness, dizziness, and confusion
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended during pregnancy unless compelling reasons exist
- Use lowest effective dosage during pregnancy
- Not recommended during the last trimester of pregnancy
- Small quantities may be detected in breast milk with no expected undesirable effects on the infant
Precautions & Warnings
- Close observation of patients with severe hepatic, cardiac or renal insufficiency or the elderly
- Use of lowest effective dose and monitoring of renal function in such patients
- Discontinuation of Diclofenac if abnormal liver function tests or other manifestations occur
- Monitoring of long term NSAID treatments for renal, hepatic function, and blood counts
