Description
- Short-term treatment for post-traumatic pain, inflammation, and swelling
- Post-operative pain relief following dental or orthopaedic surgery
- Treatment for painful and/or inflammatory gynaecological conditions
- Management of migraine attacks
- Relief for painful syndromes of the vertebral column
- Non-articular rheumatism management
- Adjunct treatment for severe painful inflammatory infections of the ear, nose, or throat
- Pharmacological mechanism involves inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2)
- Potent inhibitor of prostaglandin synthesis in vitro
- Sensitization of afferent nerves and potentiation of bradykinin action
- Mediation of inflammation by prostaglandins
- Decrease of prostaglandins in peripheral tissues
- Adult dosage: initial loading dose of 50 mg, followed by 25-50 mg every eight hours if necessary
- Dosage for migraine: initial loading dose of 50 mg, followed by 25-50 mg after 2 hours, maximum daily dose is 150 mg
- Children over 14 years of age can take up to 75 mg daily in divided doses
- Possible drug interactions with Lithium, Digoxin, Anticoagulants, Cyclosporin, Methotrexate, Diuretics, other NSAIDs, and steroids
- Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to Diclofenac
- Not recommended for patients who have experienced asthma, urticaria, or allergic reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Contraindicated for treatment of perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
- Possible side effects include epigastric pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, dyspepsia, flatulence, anorexia, gastrointestinal bleeding, peptic ulcer, and bloody diarrhea
- Not to be prescribed in pregnancy, especially during the last trimester
- Diclofenac might be detected in breast milk, but no undesirable effects on the infant are expected
- Therapeutic class includes drugs for osteoarthritis, drugs used for rheumatoid arthritis, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Storage conditions: Keep below 30°C, away from light and moisture, and out of the reach of children
