Indications
- Osteoarthritis (OA)
- Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Acute gouty arthritis
- Moderate pain associated with dental surgery
Pharmacology
- Orally active cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) specific inhibitor
- Inhibition of COX-2 decreases clinical signs and symptoms with decreased potential for GI toxicity and effects on platelet aggregation
- Did not inhibit COX-1 at doses up to 150 mg daily
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended doses for different conditions
- Possible need for additional postoperative analgesia
- Shortest duration possible and lowest effective daily dose should be used
- Patients need for symptomatic relief and response to therapy should be re-evaluated periodically
Interaction
- With oral anticoagulants
- With diuretics, ACE inhibitors and Angiotensin II Antagonists
- With Acetylsalicylic Acid
- With Ciclosporin and tacrolimus
- With Lithium
- Take without regards to meals
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of the excipients
- Active peptic ulceration or active GI bleeding
- Patients who have experienced allergic-type reactions after taking acetylsalicylic acid or NSAIDs including COX-2 inhibitors
- Pregnancy and lactation
- Severe hepatic dysfunction
- Estimated renal creatinine clearance <30 ml/min
- Children and adolescents under 16 years of age
- Inflammatory bowel disease
- Congestive heart failure
- Patients with hypertension, established ischaemic heart disease, peripheral arterial disease, and/or cerebrovascular disease

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended in women attempting to conceive
- Not known whether excreted in human milk
- Excreted in the milk of lactating rats
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution with patients at risk of developing a gastrointestinal complication
- Caution with patients with significant risk factors for cardiovascular events
- Monitoring of renal function in certain patients
- Caution in patients with a history of cardiac failure, left ventricular dysfunction, or hypertension
- Monitoring of liver function and discontinuation if signs of hepatic insufficiency occur
- Discontinue Eflam at the first appearance of certain signs
- May mask fever and other signs of inflammation
- Caution when co-administering with warfarin or other oral anticoagulants
Overdose Effects
- Administration of single doses up to 500 mg and multiple doses up to 150 mg/day did not result in significant toxicity
