Description
Atova 40 mg Tablet is indicated for the reduction of elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B (Apo-B) and triglycerides levels in various diseases when response to diet and other non-pharmacological measures is inadequate. It is also used for the prevention of cardiovascular events and to reduce cardiac ischaemic events in patients with asymptomatic or mild to moderate symptomatic coronary artery disease with elevated LDL-cholesterol levels.
DosageAndAdministration
- Indications:
- Reduction of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in patients with heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia
- Reduction of elevated cholesterol and triglycerides in patients with mixed dyslipidemia (Fredrickson Type Ia and Ib)
- Treatment of patients with elevated serum triglyceride levels in hypertriglyceridaemia (Fredrickson Type IV)
- Treatment of patients with dysbetalipoproteinaemia (Fredrickson Type III)
- Reduction of total and LDL-cholesterol concentrations in patients with hypercholesterolemia associated with or exacerbated by diabetes mellitus or renal transplantation
- Pharmacology: Selective inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase; lowers plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein levels by inhibiting cholesterol synthesis and increasing the number of hepatic LDL receptors
- Dosage:
- Adults: Usually 10 mg once daily; may be increased at intervals of at least 4 weeks to max. 80 mg once daily
- Children (10-18 years): Initially 10 mg once daily, increased if necessary at intervals of at least 4 weeks to usual max. 20 mg once daily
- Interaction:
- Antacid: When coadministered, plasma concentrations of atorvastatin decreased approximately 35%
- CoadministrationWithColestipol: Plasma concentrations of atorvastatin decreased approximately 25% when coadministered
- Warfarin: No clinically significant effect on prothrombin time when administered to patients receiving chronic warfarin treatment
- Contraindications: Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication, active liver disease, unexplained persistent elevations of serum transaminases, history of serious adverse reaction to prior administration of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors
Precautions
- LiverEffects: Liver function tests should be performed before the initiation of treatment and periodically thereafter; use with caution in patients who consume substantial quantities of alcohol or have a history of liver disease

- Geriatric: Plasma concentrations are higher in healthy elderly subjects than in young adults
- Pediatric: Pharmacokinetic data in the pediatric population are not available
- Gender: No clinically significant difference in LDL-C reduction between men and women
- RenalInsufficiency: No influence on the plasma concentrations or LDL-C reduction
- HepaticInsufficiency: In patients with chronic alcoholic liver disease, plasma concentrations are markedly increased

Specific treatment is not available for atorvastatin overdose; patient should be treated symptomatically and supportive measures instituted; liver function tests should be performed and serum CK levels monitored
