Indications
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Degenerative joint diseases
- Musculoskeletal and joint disorders
- Pain relief for dental pain
- Pain relief for headache
- Pain relief for dysmenorrhea
Pharmacology
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Analgesic
- Antipyretic
- Inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis
- Stabilizes lysosomal membranes
- Inhibits leukotriene synthesis
- Antibradykinin activity
Dosage
- Recommended starting dose of 150-300 mg/day
- Maintenance dosage of 100-200 mg/day
- Usual recommended dose for pain management: 25-50 mg every 6-8 hours
- Maximum daily dose of 300 mg
Administration
- Oral forms to be taken with fluids
- Preferably with food
Interactions
- Not recommended with other NSAIDs
- Increased risk of gastrointestinal ulceration and bleeding with anticoagulants
- Coadministration precautions for lithium
- Increased risk of haematologic toxicity with high dose methotrexate
- Risk of hyperkalemia with certain medicinal products
- Increased risk of gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding with corticosteroids
- Patients taking diuretics at greater risk of renal failure
- Possible acute renal failure with ACE inhibitors and Angiotensin II Antagonists
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity reactions to ketoprofen, ASA, or other NSAIDs
- Severe heart failure
- Active or history of peptic ulcer/hemorrhage
- Severe hepatic insufficiency
- Severe renal insufficiency
- Third trimester of pregnancy
- Rectitis or history of proctorrhagia

- Rash
- Renal failure acute
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Avoid use during first and second trimester of pregnancy
- Contraindicated in last trimester of pregnancy
- Not recommended in nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in patients with gastrointestinal disease
- Careful monitoring of renal function
- Caution in patients with abnormal liver function tests
- Consider withdrawal in women attempting to conceive
Use in Special Populations
- Reduced initial dosage for Elderly
- Careful monitoring for Hepatic impairment
- Reduced initial dosage for Renal impairment
Overdose Effects
- Symptoms include lethargy, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and epigastric pain
- No specific antidotes available
