Indications

Pharmacology
Nonsteroidal agent with analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antipyretic activity
Dosage & Administration
- Adult:
- 500 mg dose for adults upto three times per day with meals
- In case of menorrhagia: 500 mg three times daily with meals
- Children:
- 6 months to 1 year: 5 ml three times/day
- 2-4 years: 10 ml three times/day
- 5-8 years: 10 ml four times /day
- 9-12 years: 15 ml four times/day
- Max Treatment Duration: Not more than 7 days without physician's advice
Interaction
- Aspirin: Concomitant administration not generally recommended
- Warfarin: Can inhibit platelet aggregation and prolong prothrombin time
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Mefenamic Acid
- Peptic ulcer
- Inflammatory bowel diseases
- Hepatic or renal impairment
- History of bronchospasm or skin rashes induced by aspirin or other NSAIDs
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal issues (abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea, ulcers, vomiting)
- Dizziness
- Abnormal renal function
- Pruritus
- Rashes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety: Not established, benefits should outweigh risks
- Breastfeeding: Not recommended due to potential effects on infant's cardiovascular system
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered with caution in allergic diseases, especially in asthma
- Treatment should be withdrawn in case of certain adverse events
