Indications
- Fever
- Toothache
- Headache
- Migraine
- Primary dysmenorrhoea
- Menorrhagia
- Mild to moderate pain in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
- Traumatic pain
- Low-back pain
- Juvenile chronic arthritis in children
Pharmacology
- Contains Mefenamic Acid
- Analgesic
- Anti-inflammatory
- Antipyretic
- Inhibits prostaglandin synthetase enzymes
- Antagonizes prostaglandin actions
Dosage & Administration
- Adult:
- 500 mg dose should be given to adults up to three times per day with meals
- Dosage may be reduced to 250 mg three times daily
- For menorrhagia: 500 mg three times daily with meals, from the onset of menses
- Children:
- 6 months to 1 year: 5 ml three times/day
- 2-4 years: 10 ml three times/day
- 5-8 years: 10 ml four times/day
- 9-12 years: 15 ml four times/day
- Treatment not to be continued for more than 7 days except on a physician's advice
Interaction
- Concomitant administration with Aspirin not generally recommended
- Can inhibit platelet aggregation
- May prolong prothrombin time in patients on warfarin therapy
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Mefenamic Acid
- Peptic ulcer
- Inflammatory bowel diseases
- Hepatic or renal impairment
- Aspirin and/or other NSAIDs induced symptoms of bronchospasm, skin rashes
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal adverse experiences: abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea, GI ulcers, vomiting
- Dizziness
- Abnormal renal function
- Pruritus
- Rashes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Safety not established on reproductive capacity and pregnancy
- Use in women of childbearing potential and during pregnancy only under physician's judgment
- Trace amounts in breast milk, not to be taken by nursing mother
Precautions & Warnings
- Administered with caution in allergic diseases, especially in asthma
- Treatment to be withdrawn in diarrhea, rashes, cholestatic jaundice, thrombocytopenia, haemolytic anemia
