Indications
- Fever
- Toothache
- Headache
- Migraine
- Primary dysmenorrhoea
- Menorrhagia
- Mild to moderate pain in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
- Traumatic pain
- Low-back pain
- Juvenile chronic arthritis in children
Pharmacology
- Analgesic activity
- Anti-inflammatory activity
- Antipyretic activity
- Inhibition of prostaglandin synthetase
- Antagonism of prostaglandin at receptor sites
Dosage & Administration
- Adult:
- 500 mg dose for adults upto three times daily with meals
- 250 mg dose three times daily for menorrhagia
- Children:
- 5 ml three times/day for 6 months to 1 year
- 10 ml three times/day for 2-4 years
- 10 ml four times/day for 5-8 years
- 15 ml four times/day for 9-12 years
- Treatment Duration: Not more than 7 days without physician's advice
Interaction
- Aspirin: Contraindicated due to potential increased adverse effects
- Warfarin: May inhibit platelet aggregation and prolong prothrombin time
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Mefenamic Acid
- Peptic ulcer
- Inflammatory bowel diseases
- Hepatic or renal impairment
- Symptoms of bronchospasm or skin rashes induced by aspirin or other NSAIDs
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal adverse experiences (abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea, ulcers, vomiting)
- Dizziness
- Abnormal renal function
- Pruritus
- Rashes
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Use in women of childbearing potential and during pregnancy only when benefits outweigh risks
- Trace amounts present in breast milk
- Not recommended for nursing mothers due to effects on infant's cardiovascular system
Precautions & Warnings
- Caution in allergic diseases, especially asthma
- Withdraw treatment in case of diarrhoea, rashes, cholestatic jaundice, thrombocytopenia, haemolytic anaemia
