Indications
- Fever
- Toothache
- Headache
- Migraine
- Primary dysmenorrhoea
- Menorrhagia
- Mild to moderate pain in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
- Traumatic pain
- Low-back pain
- Juvenile chronic arthritis in children
Pharmacology
Dual action on prostaglandins, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic activity, inhibits prostaglandin synthetase, antagonizes prostaglandin actions
Dosage & Administration
- Adult:
- 500 mg dose (upto 1.5 gm total) per day with meals
- Reduced dosage of 250 mg three times daily
- Menorrhagia: 500 mg three times daily with meals
- Children:
- 6 months to 1 year: 5 ml three times/day
- 2-4 years: 10 ml three times/day
- 5-8 years: 10 ml four times /day
- 9-12 years: 15 ml four times/day
Interaction
- Contraindicated with Aspirin due to potential increased adverse effects
- Inhibits platelet aggregation and may prolong prothrombin time with Warfarin therapy
Contraindications
Known hypersensitivity to Mefenamic Acid, peptic ulcer, inflammatory bowel diseases, hepatic or renal impairment, induced symptoms of bronchospasm, skin rashes by aspirin and/or other NSAIDs
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal adverse experiences (1-10% of patients): abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhoea, dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea, Gl ulcers, vomiting
- Dizziness, abnormal renal function, pruritus, rashes
Pregnancy & Lactation
Safety not established, cautious use in women of childbearing potential and during pregnancy, trace amounts in breast milk affecting nursing infant's cardiovascular system
Precautions & Warnings
Administer with caution in allergic diseases especially in asthma, withdrawal in case of diarrhoea, rashes, cholestatic jaundice, thrombocytopenia, haemolytic anaemia
