Description

Atrovast is indicated to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B (Apo-B), and triglycerides levels in various diseases such as heterozygous and homozygous familial hypercholesterolaemia, mixed dyslipidemia, hypertriglyceridaemia, dysbetalipoproteinaemia, coronary artery disease, hypercholesterolemia associated with diabetes mellitus or renal transplantation. It works as a selective inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, lowering plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein levels by inhibiting cholesterol synthesis and increasing hepatic LDL receptors. The recommended dosage ranges from 10 to 80 mg once daily and should be administered with caution in patients with liver disease. Atrovast has potential interactions with several drugs including cyclosporine, fibric acid derivatives, niacin, erythromycin, and oral contraceptives. It is contraindicated in pregnancy, lactation, active liver disease, and hypersensitivity to any component of the medication. Common side effects include constipation, flatulence, dyspepsia, abdominal pain, infection, headache, back pain, rash, asthenia, arthralgia, and myalgia. It should be stored in a dry place away from light and heat and kept out of the reach of children.
