Indications
- Rheumatoid arthritis

Pharmacology
- Blocks COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes
- Decreases prostaglandin synthesis
Dosage & Administration
- Taken with water
- Preferably after meals
- Different dosages for different conditions
- Oral and suspension forms available
- Not recommended for children under 16 years
Interaction
- Diminishes antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibitors
- Delays absorption with antacids & Sucralfate
- Increases adverse effects with Aspirin
- Reduces natriuretic effect of Diuretics
- Enhances the toxicity of Methotrexate
- Increases risk of GI bleeding with Warfarin and Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI)
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Naproxen
- Asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal: Heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Central Nervous System: Headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- Dermatological: Pruritus (itching), purpura
- Cardiovascular: Edema, palpitation
- Others: Visual disturbances, hearing disturbances
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Adverse effects on the fetus
- Causes delay in parturition in animals
- Associated with premature closure of the ductus arteriosus and severe pulmonary hypertension in infants
- Excreted in small amounts in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Renal effects: renal papillary necrosis, abnormal renal pathology, acute interstitial nephritis, hematuria, proteinuria, nephrotic syndrome
- Hepatic effects: moderate to severe jaundice
