- Increased risk of GI bleeding with warfarin and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI)
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to naproxen
- Hypersensitivity after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Treatment contraindicated in perioperative pain post coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal effects like heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea
- Central nervous system effects like headache and drowsiness
- Dermatological effects like itching and purpura
- Cardiovascular effects like edema and palpitation
- Other effects like visual and hearing disturbances
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Adverse effects on fetus
- Delayed parturition
- Association with premature closure of ductus arteriosus and severe pulmonary hypertension in infants born to mothers taking naproxen
- Excretion in small amounts in breast milk
- Consideration of benefits and risks in first and third trimesters
- Caution regarding breastfeeding during therapy
Precautions & Warnings
- Renal effects
- Reports of abnormal renal pathology
- Caution in patients with impaired renal function
- Monitoring of serum creatinine and/or creatinine clearance
- Caution in patients with creatinine clearance below 20ml/min
- Hepatic effects
- Reports of moderate to severe jaundice
