Interaction
- diminishes antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibitors
- delays absorption with antacids & sucralfate
- increases adverse effects with aspirin
- reduces natriuretic effect of diuretics
- enhances toxicity of methotrexate
- increases risk of GI bleeding with warfarin
- increases risk of GI bleeding with Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI)
Contraindications
- known hypersensitivity to Naproxen
- asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- gastrointestinal: Heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- central nervous system: Headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- dermatological: Pruritus (itching), purpura
- cardiovascular: Edema, palpitation
- others: Visual disturbances, hearing disturbances
Pregnancy & Lactation
- may have adverse effect on the fetus
- causes delay in parturition in animals
- associated with premature closure of the ductus arteriosus
- excreted in small amounts in breast milk
- requires careful balancing in first and third trimesters
- considered by some authorities to be too small to be harmful to a breast-fed infant
Precautions & Warnings
- renal effects: reports of acute interstitial nephritis, hematuria, proteinuria, nephrotic syndrome associated with Naproxen-containing products
- should be used with caution in patients with impaired renal function
- monitoring of serum creatinine and/or creatinine clearance advised
- liver effects: reports of moderate to severe jaundice attributed to Naproxen
