Description
- Indicated for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, juvenile arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, acute gout, primary dysmenorrhea, and pain management
- Blocks COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes to decrease prostaglandin synthesis
- Dosage includes oral tablets, suspension, and gel for adults and children
- Interacts with ACE inhibitors, antacids, aspirin, diuretics, methotrexate, warfarin, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to Naproxen and perioperative pain in coronary artery bypass graft surgery
- Side effects include gastrointestinal, central nervous system, dermatological, cardiovascular, visual, and hearing disturbances
- May have adverse effects on fetus and excreted in small amounts in breast milk
- Precautions for renal and hepatic effects, therapeutic class as NSAIDs for osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

Pharmacology

Interaction
- Diminishes antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibitors
- Delays the absorption of Naproxen with antacids and sucralfate

- Increases the risk of GI bleeding with warfarin and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Naproxen
- Asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Treatment of perioperative pain in coronary artery bypass graft surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal: Heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Central Nervous System: Headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- Dermatological: Pruritus (itching), purpura
- Cardiovascular: Edema, palpitation
- Others: Visual disturbances, hearing disturbances
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Associated with premature closure of the ductus arteriosus and severe pulmonary hypertension in infants born to mothers taking Naproxen
- Excreted in small amounts in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Long-term administration may result in renal and hepatic effects
- Caution in patients with significantly impaired renal function
- Monitoring of serum creatinine and/or creatinine clearance advised
- Few reports of moderate to severe jaundice attributed to Naproxen
