Description

Naproxen is indicated for the relief of signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, juvenile arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, acute gout, and for the management of primary dysmenorrhea & pain.

  • Pharmacological Action: Blocks COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, leading to decreased prostaglandin synthesis
  • Dosage & Administration:
    • Oral intake with water after meals
    • 500-1000 mg per day for adults with rheumatoid arthritis/osteoarthritis/ankylosing spondylitis
    • Two divided doses at 12-hour intervals for maintenance dose
    • 750 mg initially for acute gout, then 250 mg every 8 hours until the attack has passed
    • 500 mg initially, followed by 250 mg at 6-8 hour intervals for dysmenorrhea
    • 500 mg initially, followed by 250 mg at 6-8 hour intervals for other indications
    • Dosage for children based on weight
    • Naproxen Gel: Applied 2-6 times a day
  • Interactions:

    • Antacids & Sucralfate
    • Aspirin
    • Diuretics
    • Methotrexate

    • Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI)
  • Contraindications:
    • Known hypersensitivity to Naproxen
    • Asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
    • Perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
  • Side Effects:
    • Gastrointestinal: Heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
    • Central Nervous System: Headache, vertigo, drowsiness
    • Dermatological: Pruritus (itching), purpura
    • Cardiovascular: Edema, palpitation
    • Others: Visual disturbances, hearing disturbances
  • Pregnancy & Lactation: May have adverse effects on the fetus, excreted in small amounts in breast milk, requires careful balancing of benefits and risks to the mother and fetus
  • Precautions & Warnings:
    • Renal effects: Reports of abnormal renal pathology, use with caution in patients with impaired renal function
    • Hepatic effects: Reports of moderate to severe jaundice attributed to Naproxen
