Pharmacology
Blocks COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes to decrease prostaglandin synthesis
Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration with water after meals
- Adult dosage for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis
- Adult dosage for acute gout
- Adult dosage for dysmenorrhoea
- Adult dosage for other indications like analgesia and acute musculoskeletal disorders
- Children dosage for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
- Application instructions for Naproxen Gel
Interaction
- Diminishes antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibitors
- Delays absorption of Nozee with antacids & Sucralfate
- Increase of adverse effects with Aspirin
- Reduces natriuretic effect of Diuretics
- Enhances the toxicity of Methotrexate
- Increases the risk of GI bleeding with Warfarin
- Increases the risk of GI bleeding with Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI)
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Naproxen
- History of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal side effects: Heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Central Nervous System side effects: Headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- Dermatological side effects: Pruritus (itching), purpura
- Cardiovascular side effects: Edema, palpitation
- Other side effects: Visual disturbances, hearing disturbances
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Adverse effects on the fetus
- Delayed parturition in animals
- Premature closure of the ductus arteriosus in infants
- Excretion in small amounts in breast milk
- Balancing benefits to the mother against possible risks to the fetus
- Naproxen distributed into breast milk considered to be too small to be harmful to a breast-fed infant
- Some manufacturers recommend avoiding breastfeeding during Naproxen therapy
Precautions & Warnings
- Renal effects: Reports of renal papillary necrosis, abnormal renal pathology, acute interstitial nephritis, hematuria, proteinuria, and occasionally nephrotic syndrome
- Caution in patients with impaired renal function
- Monitoring of serum creatinine and/or creatinine clearance advised
- Use with caution in patients with significantly impaired renal function
- Caution in patients with creatinine clearance of less than 20ml/min
- Reports of moderate to severe jaundice attributed to Nozee
