- Indications:
- Relief of rheumatoid arthritis symptoms
- Relief of osteoarthritis symptoms
- Relief of ankylosing spondylitis symptoms
- Relief of juvenile arthritis symptoms
- Relief of tendonitis symptoms
- Relief of bursitis symptoms
- Relief of acute gout symptoms
- Management of primary dysmenorrhea & pain
- Pharmacology:
- Blocks COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes
- Decreases prostaglandin synthesis
- Dosage & Administration:
- Naproxen Enteric Coated Tablet Adult:
- For rheumatoid arthritis/osteaoarthritis/ankylosing spondylitis: 500-1000mg per day
- For acute gout: 750mg initially, then 250mg every 8 hours
- For dysmenorrhoea: 500mg initially, followed by 250mg at 6-8 hour intervals
- For other indications like analgesia and acute musculoskeletal disorders: 500mg initially, followed by 250mg at 6-8 hour intervals
- Naproxen Suspension Children: 10 mg/kg/day for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
- Naproxen Enteric Coated Tablet Adult:
- Interaction:
- ACE inhibitors diminish antihypertensive effect
- Antacids & Sucralfate delay absorption
- Aspirin increases adverse effects
- Diuretics reduce natriuretic effect
- Methotrexate enhances toxicity
- Warfarin increases risk of GI bleeding
- Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors increase risk of GI bleeding
- Contraindications:
- Known hypersensitivity to Naproxen
- Patients with asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Treatment of perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
- Side Effects:
- Gastrointestinal: heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Central Nervous System: headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- Dermatological: pruritus, purpura
- Cardiovascular: edema, palpitation
- Others: visual disturbances, hearing disturbances
- Pregnancy & Lactation:
- May have adverse effects on fetus
- Causes a delay in parturition in animals
- Associated with premature closure of ductus arteriosus and severe pulmonary hypertension in infants
- Excreted in small amounts in breast milk
- Precautions & Warnings:
- Renal effects: potential renal pathology, caution in patients with significantly impaired renal function
- Hepatic effects: reports of moderate to severe jaundice
