Pharmacology
- blocks COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes
- decreased prostaglandin synthesis

Dosage & Administration
- Ranoxen Enteric Coated Tablet for adults: 500-1000 mg per day
- Ranoxen Enteric Coated Tablet for acute gout: 750 mg initially, then 250 mg every 8 hours
- Ranoxen Suspension for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis: 10 mg/kg/day for children over 2 years
- Naproxen Gel: applied 2-6 times a day
Interaction
- ACE inhibitors diminish antihypertensive effect
- Antacids & Sucralfate delay absorption
- Aspirin increases adverse effects
- Diuretics reduce natriuretic effect
- Methotrexate enhances toxicity
- Warfarin increases risk of GI bleeding
- Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI) increase risk of GI bleeding
Contraindications
- known hypersensitivity to Naproxen
- asthma or allergic-type reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs
- perioperative pain in CABG surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal: heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea
- Central Nervous System: headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- Dermatological: itching, purpura
- Cardiovascular: edema, palpitation
- Others: visual disturbances, hearing disturbances
Pregnancy & Lactation
- adverse effect on the fetus
- delay in parturition
- premature closure of ductus arteriosus
- excreted in small amounts in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Renal effects: renal papillary necrosis, abnormal renal pathology, acute interstitial nephritis
- Hepatic effects: moderate to severe jaundice
