Pharmacology
- Blocks COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes
- Decreased prostaglandin synthesis

- Undesired adverse effects linked to COX-1 enzyme
Dosage & Administration
- Naproxen oral preparations taken with water after meals
- Adult dosage for rheumatoid arthritis/osteoarthritis/ankylosing spondylitis
- Dosage for acute gout and dysmenorrhea
- Children's dosage for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
Interaction
- Diminishes the antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibitors
- Antacids & Sucralfate delay absorption
- Increased adverse effects with Aspirin
- Reduced natriuretic effect of Diuretics
- Enhanced toxicity of Methotrexate
- Increased risk of GI bleeding with Warfarin and SSRI
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Naproxen
- Asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions from aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft surgery
