Indications
- Relief of rheumatoid arthritis

Pharmacology
- Blocks COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes
- Decreases prostaglandin synthesis
- Exerts antipyretic, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties
Dosage & Administration
- Adult dosage: 500-1000 mg per day
- Children's dosage: based on weight and specific conditions
- Naproxen oral preparations to be taken with water after meals
Interaction
- Diminishes antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibitors
- Delays absorption with antacids & sucralfate
- Increases adverse effects with aspirin
- Reduces natriuretic effect of diuretics
- Enhances toxicity of methotrexate
- Increases risk of GI bleeding with warfarin and SSRI
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Naproxen
- Asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Treatment of perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal: heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Central Nervous System: headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- Dermatological: pruritus, purpura
- Cardiovascular: edema, palpitation
- Others: visual disturbances, hearing disturbances
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Adverse effects on the fetus
- Caution required in the first and third trimesters
- Excreted in small amounts in breast milk
- Consideration of benefits vs. risks for nursing mothers
Precautions & Warnings
- Renal effects: reports of adverse renal pathology
- Caution in patients with impaired renal function
- Monitoring of serum creatinine and/or creatinine clearance advised
- Hepatic effects: reports of moderate to severe jaundice
