Indications

Pharmacology
- Blocks COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes

Dosage & Administration
- Oral administration with water after meals
- Specific dosages for different conditions and age groups

Interaction
- Diminishes the antihypertensive effect of ACE inhibitors
- Delays absorption when taken with antacids & sucralfate
- Increases adverse effects when taken with aspirin
- Reduces the natriuretic effect of diuretics
- Enhances the toxicity of methotrexate
- Increases risk of GI bleeding with warfarin and SSRI
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to naproxen
- Asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
- Perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery
Side Effects
- Gastrointestinal effects like heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia
- Central Nervous System effects like headache, vertigo, drowsiness
- Dermatological effects like itching, purpura
- Cardiovascular effects like edema, palpitation
- Others include visual and hearing disturbances
Pregnancy & Lactation
- May have adverse effect on the fetus
- Linked to delay in parturition in animals
- Associated with premature closure of the ductus arteriosus and severe pulmonary hypertension in infants born to mothers taking naproxen
- Excreted in small amounts in breast milk
Precautions & Warnings
- Reported renal and hepatic effects
- Caution advised in patients with impaired renal function
- Monitoring of serum creatinine and/or creatinine clearance advised
- Caution in patients with significantly impaired renal function
