Description
- A combination tablet indicated for the relief of signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and to decrease the risk of developing gastric ulcers in patients at risk of developing NSAID-associated gastric ulcers.
- This tablet consists of an immediate release esomeprazole magnesium layer and an enteric-coated naproxen core, with the esomeprazole released first into the stomach before the dissolution of naproxen in the small intestine.
- The dosage varies for different conditions and age groups, with specific doses for adults, adolescent patients, and precautions for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
- It is important not to split, chew, crush or dissolve the tablet, and to take it at least 30 minutes before meals.
- Possible drug interactions include those with other NSAIDs, warfarin, and medications affected by changes in gastric pH due to esomeprazole.
- The tablet is contraindicated for individuals with known hypersensitivity to its components, a history of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs, and use during the peri-operative period in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
- The tablet has been shown to decrease the occurrence of gastric ulcers and NSAID-associated upper gastrointestinal adverse events compared to naproxen alone.
- Use during pregnancy, lactation, in elderly patients, and those with renal or hepatic impairment requires careful consideration and monitoring.
- Overdose effects include symptoms related to both naproxen and esomeprazole overdoses, with management involving symptomatic and supportive care as there are no specific antidotes.
- Storage conditions recommend storing the medication at a temperature below 30°C, protected from light and moisture, and out of reach of children.
