Indications

Pharmacology

  • Immediate release Esomeprazole Magnesium layer
  • Enteric-coated Naproxen core
  • NSAID properties
  • Proton pump inhibitor properties

Dosage

  • Adult dosage: One tablet twice daily of 375 mg naproxen/20 mg of esomeprazole or 500 mg naproxen/20 mg of esomeprazole
  • Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: Dosage based on weight

Administration

  • Tablet should not be split, chewed, crushed or dissolved
  • To be taken at least 30 minutes before meals

Interaction

  • Reduction of antihypertensive effect with concomitant use of NSAIDs and ACE inhibitors, diuretics & beta-blockers
  • Increased risk of bleeding with warfarin
  • Interference with the absorption of certain drugs

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to tablet components or substituted benzimidazoles
  • History of allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
  • Contraindicated during peri-operative period in CABG surgery

Side Effects

  • Decreased incidence of gastrointestinal side effects
  • Reduced occurrence of gastric ulcers and NSAID associated adverse events
  • Possible cardiovascular and gastrointestinal adverse events
  • Potential side effects such as oedema, hypertension, and cardiac failure

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Avoid use during the first and second trimester of pregnancy
  • Contraindicated during the third trimester of pregnancy
  • Not recommended during breastfeeding
  • Potential negative impact on female fertility

Precautions & Warnings

  • Avoid use with other NSAIDs or cyclooxygenase-2 selective inhibitors
  • Use with low dose acetylsalicylic acid
  • Special caution in older people and those with gastrointestinal disease or cardiovascular risk factors

Use in Special Populations

  • Caution in elderly patients and those with renal impairment or hepatic insufficiency
