Dosage
- Standard dosage of 20 mg daily
- Acute gout dosage of 40 mg for two days followed by 20 mg for five days
- Early therapeutic effect
- Progressive increase in response
- Avoid daily doses higher than 20 mg for chronic disorders
- Reduction to a daily oral dose of 10 mg for maintenance
Administration
- Tablets to be taken with water
- Preferable to take with or immediately after a meal
Interaction
- Displacement from protein-binding sites by salicylate
- Concurrent treatment with salicylate
- Reduced renal tubular secretion of methotrexate
- Concurrent administration with gold, penicillamine, or probenecid
- Decreased renal clearance of lithium
- Attenuation of antihypertensive effects
- Interaction with furosemide
- Attenuation of antihypertensive effects of alpha-adrenergic blockers and ACE-inhibitors
- No interaction with centrally-acting alpha agonists or calcium channel blockers
- No interaction with atenolol
- Concurrent dosing with digitalis products
- No interaction with antacids, cimetidine, warfarin, phenprocoumon, oral antidiabetic drugs, or low molecular weight heparin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- Induction of symptoms of asthma, rhinitis, or urticaria by salicylates or other NSAIDs
- Upper gastrointestinal tract diseases

Precautions & Warnings
- Inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis
- Monitoring of cardiac and renal function
- Inhibition of platelet aggregation
- No significant influence on blood coagulation factors
- Monitoring of patients with coagulation disorders or drug therapy interfering with hemostasis
- Close monitoring if gastrointestinal disease or severe skin reactions occur
- Adverse eye findings reported
- Caution required with markedly reduced plasma albumin levels
- Masking of signs of infection
- Avoidance for patients who dislike or do not tolerate milk products
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for use in patients under 16 years of age
- Effects on ability to drive and use machines
