Dosage
- Standard dosage of 20 mg daily
- 40 mg per day for acute gout attacks
- Therapeutic effect evident early in treatment
- Avoid daily doses higher than 20 mg for chronic disorders
- Reduction to a daily oral dose of 10 mg may be tried for maintenance
- Applicable to elderly patients and those with kidney or liver disease
Administration
- Tablets to be taken with a glass of water
- Preferable to take with or immediately after a meal
Interaction
- Salicylate displaces Inoten from protein-binding sites
- Increased risk of gastrointestinal undesirable reactions with concurrent treatment of salicylate or other NSAIDs
- Caution with concurrent administration of methotrexate
- No clinically relevant interaction with gold, penicillamine, or probenecid
- Decreased renal clearance of lithium with concomitant administration
- Known interaction with K-sparing diuretics leading to hyperkalemia and renal failure
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- Induction of asthma, rhinitis, or urticaria by salicylates or other NSAIDs
- History of upper gastrointestinal tract disease

Pregnancy & Lactation
- Inhibitory effect on prostaglandin synthesis during late pregnancy
- Avoid treatment in the third trimester
- Small amount of tenoxicam in breast milk
- No evidence of adverse reactions in breast-fed infants
Precautions & Warnings
- Inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis
- Monitoring of renal function
- Inhibition of platelet aggregation
- Potential influence on hemostasis
- Closer monitoring for patients with coagulation disorders
- Closely observe patients with symptoms of gastrointestinal disease
- Immediate withdrawal if peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding occurs
- Discontinue treatment if severe skin reactions occur
- Ophthalmic evaluation for patients with visual disturbances
- Caution with reduced plasma albumin levels
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for use in patients under 16 years of age
- Effects on ability to drive and use machines
