- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)
- Anti-inflammatory
- Analgesic
- Antipyretic
- Inhibits platelet aggregation
- Inhibits prostaglandin biosynthesis
- Inhibitor of human metalloproteinases
- No mutagenic, carcinogenic, or teratogenic effects in animals
Dosage
- Standard dosage of 20 mg daily
- 40 mg for acute gout attacks followed by 20 mg
- Therapeutic effect early in treatment
- Progressive response over time
- Reduction to a daily oral dose of 10 mg for maintenance
- Special dosage instructions for elderly patients, kidney or liver disease
Administration
- Tablets to be taken with a glass of water
- Preferable to take with a meal
Interaction
- Displacement by salicylate
- Concurrent treatment with salicylate or other NSAIDs to be avoided
- Caution with methotrexate
- May decrease renal clearance of lithium
- Avoid concurrent use with K-sparing diuretics
- No interaction with antacids, cimetidine, warfarin, phenprocoumon
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- Induction of asthma, rhinitis, or urticaria by salicylates or other NSAIDs
- Upper gastrointestinal tract diseases

- Inhibition of platelet aggregation
- Adverse eye findings reported
- Caution required with reduced plasma albumin levels
- Masking of signs of infection
- Avoidance in patients who dislike or do not tolerate milk products
Use in Special Populations
- Not recommended for use in patients under 16 years of age
- Effects on ability to drive and use machines
Overdose Effects
- Expected signs and symptoms more pronounced
- Counter measures such as gastrolavage and charcoal
