Dosage
- Standard daily dosage of 20 mg
- Recommended dosage for acute gout attacks

- Reduction to a daily oral dose of 10 mg for maintenance
- Special dosage instructions for elderly and patients with kidney or liver disease
Administration
- Administration with a glass of water
- Preferable administration during or immediately after a meal
Interaction
- Displacement from protein-binding sites by salicylate
- Avoidance of concurrent treatment with salicylate or other NSAIDs
- Exercise caution with concurrent administration with methotrexate
- No clinically relevant interaction with gold, penicillamine, or probenecid
- Decreased renal clearance of lithium with concomitant administration
- Known interaction with K-sparing diuretics
- Attenuation of the blood pressure-lowering effect of hydrochlorothiazide
- Attenuation of the antihypertensive effects of alpha-adrenergic blockers and ACE-inhibitors
- No clinically relevant interaction with atenolol and digoxin
- No clinically relevant interaction with antacids, cimetidine, warfarin, phenprocoumon, or low molecular weight heparin
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to the drug
- Induction of symptoms of asthma, rhinitis, or urticaria by salicylates or other NSAIDs
- Suffering or having suffered from upper gastrointestinal tract diseases
Side Effects
- Mild and transient undesirable effects
- Possible interruption of treatment due to undesirable effects
- Reported gastrointestinal, central nervous system, skin, urinary tract, kidney, liver, cardiovascular, blood, and hypersensitivity reactions
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Inhibitory effect on prostaglandin synthesis
- Avoidance of treatment during the third trimester of pregnancy
- Passage of approximately 0.2% of tenoxicam into breast milk
- No evidence of adverse reactions in breast-fed infants
Precautions & Warnings
- Inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis
- Potential undesirable effects on renal hemodynamics and salt and water balance
- Inhibition of platelet aggregation and potential effect on hemostasis
- Masking of usual signs of infection
- Recommendation for ophthalmic evaluation for patients with visual disturbances
- Caution when plasma albumin levels are markedly reduced
- Masking of usual signs of infection
Use in Special Populations
