Dosage

  • Standard daily dosage of 20mg

  • Reduction to a daily oral dose of 10mg for long-term treatment
  • Applicable to elderly and patients with kidney or liver disease
  • No established dosage recommendations for children and adolescents

Administration

  • Tablets to be taken with a glass of water
  • Preferable to take medicine during or immediately after a meal

Interaction

  • Salicylate displacement from protein-binding sites
  • Increased clearance and volume of distribution with salicylate
  • Avoid concurrent treatment with salicylate or other NSAIDs
  • Caution with concurrent administration of methotrexate
  • Do not administer concurrently with K-sparing diuretics
  • Interaction with lithium leading to increased plasma levels
  • Attenuation of blood pressure-lowering effect of hydrochlorothiazide
  • Attenuation of antihypertensive effects with alpha-adrenergic blockers and ACE-inhibitors
  • No interactions reported with centrally-acting alpha agonists or calcium channel blockers
  • No clinically relevant interaction with atenolol
  • No interaction with concomitantly administered antacids, cimetidine, warfarin, phenprocoumon, and low molecular weight heparin

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity to the drug
  • Hypersensitivity to salicylates or other NSAIDs inducing asthma, rhinitis, or urticaria
  • Disease of the upper gastrointestinal tract such as gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcer

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Weaning or discontinuation recommended

Precautions & Warnings

  • Inhibition of renal prostaglandin synthesis
  • Elevated risk of renal failure in certain conditions
  • Inhibition of platelet aggregation
  • No significant influence on blood coagulation factors
  • Necessity to monitor patients with coagulation disorders or receiving drug therapy that interferes with hemostasis
  • Close monitoring of patients presenting with gastrointestinal disease
  • Immediate withdrawal if peptic ulceration or gastrointestinal bleeding occurs
  • Discontinuation if severe skin reactions occur
  • Ophthalmic evaluation recommended for patients with visual disturbances
  • Caution required when plasma albumin levels are reduced
  • Masking of usual signs of infection
  • Avoidance in patients who dislike or do not tolerate milk products

Use in Special Populations

  • Not recommended for use in patients under 16 years of age
  • Effects on ability to drive and use machines in patients experiencing adverse events

Overdose Effects

  • Expected exacerbation of undesirable effects
