Description
- Chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout
- Not recommended for asymptomatic hyperuricemia
- Non-purine, selective xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor
- Decreases serum uric acid levels
- Indicated dosages: 40 mg, 80 mg, 120 mg
- Treatment for Tumor Lysis Syndrome
- Management of gout flares
- No dose adjustment for mild to moderate renal impairment
- No dose adjustment for mild to moderate hepatic impairment
- Not established for pediatric use
- Interaction with mercaptopurine/azathioprine
- Interaction with rosiglitazone/CYP2C8 substrates
- Interaction with naproxen and other glucuronidation inhibitors
- Interaction with inducers of glucuronidation
- Co-administration with colchicine/indometacin/hydrochlorothiazide/warfarin
- Interaction with antacids
- Contraindicated in patients being treated with azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or theophylline
- Commonly reported adverse reactions: gout flares, liver function abnormalities, diarrhea, nausea, headache, rash, edema
- Rare serious hypersensitivity reactions
- Pregnancy Category C
- Caution during lactation
- Increase in gout flares during treatment initiation
- Higher rate of cardiovascular thromboembolic events
- Monitor signs and symptoms of MI and stroke
- Transaminase elevations observed
