Indications
- Chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout
Pharmacology
- Non-purine selective xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended starting dose of 40 mg tablet once daily
- Dose adjustment for renal impairment not necessary
Interaction
- Contraindicated with mercaptopurine/azathioprine
- Possible interaction with rosiglitazone/CYP2C8 substrates
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients being treated with azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or theophylline
Side Effects
- Commonly reported adverse reactions of gout flares, liver function abnormalities, diarrhea, nausea, headache, rash, and edema
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C
- Caution advised during lactation
Precautions & Warnings
- Increased gout flares during initiation of treatment
- Higher rate of cardiovascular thromboembolic events observed
- Transaminase elevations observed, monitor liver function tests periodically

- Studied in doses up to 300 mg daily for seven days without evidence of dose-limiting toxicities
