Indications
- Chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout
Pharmacology
- Non-purine, selective xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor
- Decreases serum uric acid level by inhibiting xanthine oxidase
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended starting dose of Febuxostat 40 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage adjustment based on serum uric acid levels
- Recommended dose for Tumor Lysis Syndrome and Gout Flares
- No dose adjustment needed for renal or hepatic impairment
Interaction
- Contraindicated with mercaptopurine, azathioprine, or theophylline
- Co-administration with other drugs such as rosiglitazone and naproxen
Contraindications
- Contradicted in patients being treated with azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or theophylline
Side Effects
- Common adverse reactions include gout flares, liver function abnormalities, diarrhoea, nausea, headache, rash, and edema
- Rare serious hypersensitivity reactions observed

- Caution advised during lactation

- Increased gout flares during initiation of treatment
- Monitor for cardiovascular events and liver enzyme elevation
