Indications
- Chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout
Pharmacology
- Non-purine, selective xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended starting dose: Febuxostat 40 mg tablet once daily
- Dosage adjustment based on serum uric acid levels
- Specific dose recommendations for Tumor Lysis Syndrome and Gout Flares
- No dose adjustment needed for renal or hepatic impairment
- No established safety and effectiveness for pediatric use
Interaction
- Contraindicated with mercaptopurine, azathioprine, or theophylline
- No expected dose adjustment when co-administered with rosiglitazone or CYP2C8 substrates
- Potential impact when co-administered with naproxen, probenecid, inducers, and inhibitors of glucuronidation
- Co-administration with colchicine, indomethacin, hydrochlorothiazide, warfarin, or antacids
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients being treated with azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or theophylline
Side Effects
- Common adverse reactions: gout flares, liver function abnormalities, diarrhea, nausea, headache, rash, and edema
- Rare serious hypersensitivity reactions observed
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Pregnancy Category C. Caution during lactation.

- Increased gout flares during initiation of treatment
- Higher rate of cardiovascular thromboembolic events observed
- Transaminase elevations observed, periodic liver function test monitoring recommended
