Indications

  • Chronic management of hyperuricemia in patients with gout

Pharmacology

  • Non-purine, selective xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor

Dosage & Administration

  • Recommended starting dose: Febuxostat 40 mg tablet once daily
  • Dosage adjustment based on serum uric acid levels
  • Specific dose recommendations for Tumor Lysis Syndrome and Gout Flares
  • No dose adjustment needed for renal or hepatic impairment
  • No established safety and effectiveness for pediatric use

Interaction

  • Contraindicated with mercaptopurine, azathioprine, or theophylline
  • No expected dose adjustment when co-administered with rosiglitazone or CYP2C8 substrates
  • Potential impact when co-administered with naproxen, probenecid, inducers, and inhibitors of glucuronidation
  • Co-administration with colchicine, indomethacin, hydrochlorothiazide, warfarin, or antacids

Contraindications

  • Contraindicated in patients being treated with azathioprine, mercaptopurine, or theophylline

Side Effects

  • Common adverse reactions: gout flares, liver function abnormalities, diarrhea, nausea, headache, rash, and edema
  • Rare serious hypersensitivity reactions observed

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • Pregnancy Category C. Caution during lactation.
