Indications
- Spasticity resulting from multiple sclerosis
- Flexor spasms and concomitant pain, clonus and muscular rigidity
- Skeletal muscle spasm resulting from rheumatic disorders
- Spinal cord injuries and other spinal cord diseases
- Cerebrovascular accidents or neoplastic or degenerative brain disease
Pharmacology
- Inhibits both monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes at the spinal level
- Stimulates the GABAB receptors
- Inhibits the release of glutamate and aspartate
- Produces CNS depression
- Exerts antinociceptive effect
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended dosage for adults and children over 10 years
- Initial dose of 5 mg 3 times daily, gradually increased
- Maximum daily dosage of 100 mg
- Specific dosage recommendations for children under 10 years
Interactions
- Increased sedation when taken with CNS acting agents, alcohol, or synthetic opiates
- Likely increase in blood pressure when combined with antihypertensives
- Potentiation of effects when combined with tricyclic antidepressants
- Reports of mental confusion and other effects when taken with levodopa, carbidopa, or MAO inhibitors
