Description
- Indicated for spasticity resulting from multiple sclerosis
- Used for flexor spasms, concomitant pain, clonus, and muscular rigidity
- Provides relief for skeletal muscle spasm resulting from rheumatic disorders
- Suitable for spinal cord injuries and other spinal cord diseases
- Effective for cerebrovascular accidents, neoplastic, or degenerative brain disease
- Inhibits monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes at the spinal level
- Stimulates GABAB receptors, inhibiting the release of glutamate and aspartate
- Produces CNS depression and exerts an antinociceptive effect
- Adult dosage: 5 mg 3 times daily, max. 100 mg daily
- Children dosage varies according to age
- Should be taken preferably with or after food
- Interacts with agents acting on the central nervous system
- Combined treatment with antihypertensives may increase the fall in blood pressure
- Concomitant administration with tricyclic antidepressants may potentiate effects
- Reports of mental confusion, hallucinations, and agitation in Parkinson's patients
- Caution advised when administering with MAO inhibitors
- Can potentially interact with magnesium sulphate or other neuromuscular blocking agents
- Contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any component
- Common side effects include transient drowsiness, dizziness, and weakness
- Adverse reactions may include insomnia, euphoria, depression, and hypotension
- May cause gastrointestinal discomfort such as nausea, constipation, and abdominal pain
- Urinary frequency and retention, as well as enuresis, are potential genitourinary side effects
- Other rare side effects include rash, pruritus, weight gain, and visual disturbances
- Pregnancy category B3, safe use during pregnancy not established
- Excreted in breast milk but quantities are small with no expected effects on the infant
- Lower doses should be used for patients with impaired renal function
- Exacerbation of psychotic disorders may occur in some patients
- Seizures have been reported after cessation of therapy or overdose
- Should be used with caution in patients with peptic ulcers, cerebrovascular diseases, or organ failure
- Respiratory and cardiovascular function should be monitored, especially in patients with cardiopulmonary disease
- May improve neurogenic disturbances affecting bladder emptying
- May not significantly benefit patients with stroke and poor tolerance has been observed
- Appropriate laboratory tests should be performed periodically in patients with hepatic diseases or diabetes mellitus
- Gastric lavage is important in case of severe overdose
- Belongs to the therapeutic class of centrally acting Skeletal Muscle Relaxants
- Should be stored below 30°C temperature, away from light and moisture
