Pharmacology
Inhibits monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes, stimulates GABA receptors, CNS depression, antinociceptive effect
Dosage & Administration
- Adult & children over 10 years: 5 mg 3 times daily, max. 100 mg daily
- Children <10 years:
- 2.5 mg 4 times daily
- 10-20 mg (12 month-2 years)
- 20-30 mg (2 years-6 years)
- 30-60 mg (6 years-10 years)
Interaction
- Increased sedation with CNS agents, alcohol, synthetic opiates
- Potentiation with antihypertensives
- Potentiation with tricyclic antidepressants
- Reports of confusion and hallucinations with levodopa and carbidopa
- Increased CNS depressant effects with MAO inhibitors
- Potential synergistic effect with magnesium sulfate

- Caution for peptic ulcers, cerebrovascular diseases, or hepatic, renal or respiratory failure
- Respiratory and cardiovascular function monitoring
- Neurogenic disturbances affecting bladder emptying
- Limited benefit and poor tolerance in stroke patients
- Periodic laboratory tests for hepatic diseases or diabetes mellitus
