Indications
- Spasticity resulting from multiple sclerosis
- Flexor spasms and concomitant pain, clonus and muscular rigidity
- Skeletal muscle spasm resulting from rheumatic disorders
- Spinal cord injuries and other spinal cord diseases
- Cerebrovascular accidents or neoplastic or degenerative brain disease
Pharmacology
- Inhibits monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes at the spinal level
- Stimulates GABA B receptors
- Inhibits the release of glutamate and aspartate
- Exerts an antinociceptive effect
Dosage & Administration
- Recommended adult dosage: 5 mg 3 times daily, gradually increased
- Maximum adult daily dosage: 100 mg
- Children's dosage varies based on age
- Can be taken with or after food
Interaction
- Increased sedation when taken with CNS agents, alcohol, or synthetic opiates
- Likely blood pressure fall with antihypertensives
- Potentiation of effects with tricyclic antidepressants
- Side effects when combined with levodopa and carbidopa in Parkinson's disease
- CNS depressant effects with MAO inhibitors
- Potential synergistic effect with magnesium sulphate or other neuromuscular blocking agents

- Use with caution in patients with epilepsy
- Monitoring in patients with peptic ulcers, cerebrovascular diseases, or organ failure
- Respiratory and cardiovascular function monitoring
- Bladder emptying and sphincter hypertonia caution
- No significant benefit for patients with stroke
- Lab tests for hepatic diseases or diabetes mellitus

- Gastric lavage for severe overdose
