Indications

  • Spasticity resulting from multiple sclerosis
  • Flexor spasms and concomitant pain
  • Clonus and muscular rigidity
  • Skeletal muscle spasm resulting from rheumatic disorders
  • Spinal cord injuries and other spinal cord diseases
  • Cerebrovascular accidents or neoplastic or degenerative brain disease

Pharmacology

  • Inhibits both monosynaptic and polysynaptic reflexes
  • Stimulates the GABA receptors
  • Inhibits the release of glutamate and aspartate
  • Produces CNS depression
  • Exerts antinociceptive effect

Dosage administration

  • 5 mg 3 times daily for adults and children over 10 years
  • Gradually increased dosage
  • Maximum daily dosage of 100 mg
  • Treatment for children under 10 years varies based on age

Interactions

  • Increased sedation when taken with CNS agents, alcohol, or synthetic opiates
  • Potential fall in blood pressure when combined with antihypertensives
  • Potentiation of effects when taken with tricyclic antidepressants
  • Reports of mental confusion, hallucinations, and agitation with Parkinson's treatment
  • Increased CNS depressant effects with MAO inhibitors
  • Potential synergistic effect with magnesium sulphate or other neuromuscular blocking agents

  • Hypersensitivity to any component of the product

Precautions warnings

  • Lower doses for impaired renal function or chronic haemodialysis patients
  • Cautious treatment for patients with psychotic disorders, schizophrenia, depressive or manic disorders
  • Use with caution in patients with epilepsy and muscle spasticity
  • Caution in patients with peptic ulcers, cerebrovascular diseases, or organ failure
  • Essential monitoring of respiratory and cardiovascular function
  • Caution in patients with bladder or sphincter hypertonia
  • No significant benefit for stroke patients

Overdose effects

Gastric lavage is important in case of severe overdose
