Description
- Central muscle relaxant with moderate central analgesic effect
Indications
- Treatment of painful muscle spasms associated with static and functional disorders of the spine and following surgery
- Treatment of spasticity due to neurological disorders like multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy
Pharmacology
- Centrally acting skeletal muscle relaxant
- Inhibits the release of excitatory amino acids
- Reduces resistance to passive movements
- Alleviates spasms and clonus
Dosage and administration
- Narrow therapeutic index and high inter-patient variability
- Initial daily dose for spasticity not to exceed 6 mg
- Pediatric use not recommended
Interaction
- Increased plasma levels with CYP1A2 inhibitors
- Contraindicated with fluvoxamine or ciprofloxacin
- Caution with drugs prolonging QT interval
- Potential interactions with antihypertensives, rifampicin, alcohol, and sedatives
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to tizanidine or excipients
