Indications

  • Adjuvant treatment for chronic bronchopulmonary diseases
  • Adjuvant treatment for acute bronchopulmonary diseases

Pharmacology

  • Mucolytic action by reducing viscosity of secretions
  • Antioxidant properties by reacting with free radicals

Dosage & Administration

  • Effervescent tablet for adults and children above 6 years
  • Effervescent granules for adults, children above 6 years, and children 2-6 years of age
  • Nebuliser solution for adults and children of varying age groups
  • Diagnostic bronchograms and nebulisation tent/croupette use cases
  • Direct instillation for routine nursing care of patients with tracheostomy

Interaction

  • Reduction of efficacy of certain antibiotics
  • Increase in the level of amoxicillin in tissues
  • Increase in the inhibitory effect of thrombocyte aggregation and vasodilation by nitroglycerine

Contraindications

  • Known hypersensitivity to Acetylcysteine
  • Contraindicated in patients suffering from phenylketonuria due to aspartame content

Side Effects

  • Possibility of severe immune reactions in very rare cases
  • Frequent side effects such as headache, increased heart rate, stomatitis, pruritus, urticaria, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, fever, decrease in blood pressure, diarrhea, and noises in the ears

Pregnancy & Lactation

  • To be taken consulting physician or pharmacist during pregnancy and lactation

Precautions & Warnings

  • Strict control for patients with bronchial asthma
  • Caution for patients with or history of peptic ulcer
  • Need for consideration by patients on a controlled sodium diet
  • Sulphureous odor characteristic
  • Preferable not to mix other drugs with Viscotin solution

Overdose Effects

  • May cause nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
