Indications

• Sterile water for injection
• Used for making solutions for injection
• Can be injected into vein, muscle, or under the skin
• Non-sterile version used in manufacturing
• Sterilization occurs later in production process

Pharmacology

• Injection into a vein without making it isotonic may cause breakdown of red blood cells
• Excessive amount may result in fluid overload
• Made by distillation or reverse osmosis
• Should contain less than a mg of elements other than water per 100 ml
• Versions with bacterial growth inhibitors available
