Pharmacology
- Chlorpheniramine Maleate is an alkylamine antihistamine
- Potent histamine H1-receptor blocking agent
- Causes less sedation than promethazine
- Exerts effects by competitively blocking H1-receptor
Dosage & Administration
- Usual adult dose: 4 mg every 4-6 hours, maximum 24 mg daily
- Child dose: 2 mg every 4-6 hours for 6-12 years, maximum 12 mg daily
- Child dose: 1 mg every 4-6 hours for 2-5 years, maximum 6 mg daily
- Child dose: 1 mg twice daily for 1-2 years
- Not recommended for use in children below 1 year old
Interaction
- Incompatible with calcium chloride
- Incompatible with kanamycin sulfate
- Incompatible with noradrenaline acid tartrate
- Incompatible with pentobarbital sodium
- Incompatible with meglumine adipiodone
Contraindications
- Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to this agent
- Contraindicated in newborn or premature infants
Side Effects
- Well-tolerated in general
- Potential side effects: drowsiness, dizziness, muscular weakness, gastrointestinal upset
Pregnancy & Lactation
- Not recommended for use in lactating mothers
- Not recommended for use in pregnancy, especially during the first trimester
Precautions & Warnings
- Use with caution in patients with glaucoma
- Use with caution in patients with prostatic hypertrophy
- Caution required in driving vehicles and operating machinery during therapy
Overdose Effects
- Central Nervous System (CNS) depression including sedation, apnea, CV collapse
- CNS stimulation including insomnia, hallucinations, tremors, convulsions
- Other potential effects: tinnitus, blurred vision, dizziness, ataxia, hypotension
- Stimulation and atropine-like signs and symptoms more likely in children
